The city of Senones
La cité des Sénons
Résumé
The city of Senones, located in the south-east of the Paris basin, around the fluvial axis of Yonne and Seine rivers, is a civic community which, by its medium size, can serve as an example in the Gallo-Roman context. Numerous archaeological investigations, old or more recent, have been carried out in Sens and its region, yielding precious testimonies on the city during the end of the Celtic period and during the Roman period. The last synthesis about the Senones having more than seventy years, it seemed appropriate to devote to them a new portrait as global as possible while privileging however, lack of time to discuss everything, some approaches such as the history of research since the Middle Ages to today, an increased interest for the environmental framework, an economic approach concentrated on the infrastructures and the actors of the city, a socio-cultural examination attentive to the dialogue between the Celtic substratum and the Greco-Roman contributions within the Senon population. Particular care has also been given to the epigraphic sources, to the sculpted reliefs as well as to the Senon coinage through a careful and critical re-examination of the documents themselves and the multiple comments they have raised. The stake of this research is to contribute to the improvement of knowledge on the city of Senones, its origins and its functioning, as a Celtic community integrated into the provincial context and the Roman Empire.
La cité des Sénons, située dans le sud-est du bassin parisien, autour de l’axe fluvial de l’Yonne et de la Seine, est une communauté civique qui, par son importance moyenne, peut faire figure d’exemple dans le contexte gallo-romain. De nombreuses investigations archéologiques, anciennes ou plus récentes ont été réalisées à Sens et dans sa région, livrant de précieux témoignages sur la cité durant la fin de l’époque celtique et au cours de la période romaine. La dernière synthèse sur les Sénons remontant aux années 1930-40, il a paru opportun de leur consacrer un nouveau portrait aussi global que possible tout en privilégiant cependant, faute de pouvoir tout traiter, certaines approches telles que l’histoire de la recherche du moyen-Âge à nos jours, un intérêt renforcé pour le cadre environnemental, une approche économique concentrée sur les infrastructures et les acteurs de la cité, un examen socio-culturel attentif au dialogue entre le substrat celtique et les apports gréco-romains au sein de la population sénone. Un soin particulier a par ailleurs été accordé aux sources épigraphiques, aux reliefs sculptés ainsi qu’au monnayage sénon à travers un réexamen attentif et critique des documents eux-mêmes et des multiples commentaires qu’ils ont suscités. L’enjeu de cette recherche est de contribuer à l’amélioration des connaissances sur la cité des Sénons, ses origines et son fonctionnement, en tant que communauté celte intégrée au contexte provincial et à l’Empire romain.
