Is there a Wise Skeptic ? Neo-pyrrhonist Critic and Usage of the wise.
Y a-t-il un sage sceptique ? Critique et usage néo-pyrrhonien de la figure du sage
Résumé
This paper tries to solve an apparent contradiction which appears in Sextus Empiricus’ Neo-pyrrhonism. On the one hand, Sextus gives some reasons to reject the philosophical ideal represented by the wise and to follow the guidance of everyday life ; on the other hand, he accepts the reference to Pyrrho as the most proeminent skeptical figure. The paper shows that the limits of the everyday life model justify the reference to Pyrrho in order to constitute skepticism as an ethical position
